Okay, May drawing to a close and a chance to end the month with distinction in the BALASA National golf championship being held at Broome Manor Golf Club in Swindon , Wiltshire. The course is one of the finest examples of a council run municipal course I have ever seen but they are having a few problems at the clubhouse ( basically it imploded !!! ) so we have to use a seating area outside but with the sun and good golfing buddies that's all good !!....
Right...... I digress from the point of the blog, the golf.
I was out today with mike lincoln, Gareth Williams and Bill west in what promised to be a good hearted and competitive fourball. I was being abley assisted by the woggle half of the dunky-woggle partnership that makes up my über caddy.
I was confident after a good practice round that I could tame the broome beast but I got off to a very poor start with a big pull off the first tee that luckily sailed around 245 yards into the semi rough of the adjoining acadamy course hole. I was lucky to be able to get a 9 iron behind it and played out to the middle of the fairway to leave myself 120yrds into a tough green. I played a very decent shot into the green and I think I was unlucky to just drift off the left hand side of the putting surface. Hmmmm. Now I'm not overly impressed as on the practice round I was 6 ft from the flag in 2 and had a chance at an eagle putt and today I'm still not putting and about to play the fourth shot !!!! All that is going through my mind is up and down for par and run for the hills. Anyway, a nice little chip and run with a 9 iron saw my ball tracking beautifully towards the hole and then it hits the flag and stops around 9 inches from the cup, whew, tap in par after that start ?? Thanks very much !!!
Things can only get better right ??
WRONG !!!
I had an absolute nightmare over the next 4 holes, seemingly grabbing 2 double bogies and a bloody triple along with a lowly par that really really should have been a birdie 3 ( Damn you slow greens )
So there I was +7 through 5 holes !!!!!!! And as I am sure you can imagine, I wasnt the happiest bunny in the hutch. But it is at times like these that woggle comes to the fore !! He got me calm and I started striking the ball better, the 3 wood in particularly which at times was carrying 250 and then rolling out another 30-40 yards. Massive distances for me and something I wasn't used to but quite enjoyed !!
The round continued but in a much calmer and more consistant ways, I got unlucky on more occasions than I care to remember today and I had 5 birdie putts either burn the edge and stop an inch away or track all the way to the hole and pull up an inch or three short but hey, thems the breaks and on another day they may have dropped. I finished in the end of the day with a + 6 and a feeling of the course handing me my backside !!
However.....
Tomorrow is the final round and it is not going to break me !! A win may well be out of reach especially with the level of players attending the comp but that doesn't mean the monk can't get out there and push hard, with 18 holes to go anything can happen. With super woggle on the bag and the wind due to be half of today's strength I have a good feeling about the round. Maybe I need to respect the course a bit more on a few holes and possibly be a bit more attacking on some of the easier holes but I intend to have a ruddy good go !!!
It would be wrong of me to not mention the other guys in my group especially with the performance of Bill, who really gave me a lesson with some fantastic displays of long putting and some really great escapes from difficult positions and he still manages to Squeek out pars where I would have nailed on a bogie. Bravo sir, it was a pleasure and a wake up call to be marking your scorecard.
Gareth had an up and down day with some lovely play and some not so lovely but it was all taken in good spirit and humour and he was a true gent.
Mike lincoln unfortunatly had a slip last night and as such he had to N/R on the first hole after 2 shots due to the pain in his ribs. Hope you heal up soon matey, Czech republic in 3 weeks dude !!!
Well that's me for today folks, will updat tomorrow and hopefully get some pics up so you can all put faces to all the names in my blogs and of course I will have to get a pic of the wonder duo woggle-dunky.
But for now peeps,
Monk out
