So day 2 got underway,
I had my new golf-wear from my wonderful sponsors function18.com, I was wearing a pink Ian Poulter shirt with pink tartan trousers also from the Ian Poulter collection.
I knew the clothes would stand out so I knew my Golf game had to as well.
I was in the first group, due to being the second lowest handicap player (6.7). My playing partner was Mathieu Cauneau from France. A very good 5 handicap player and a tough guy to beat.
I felt, that as long as I hit a good shot from the first tee that the day would be okay.
I felt confident, so I took aim, took my stance, and hit an easy swing........... straight left into the rough and trees. Not the start I was looking for !!!!
When we found the ball, I was impeded by a tree, and could only aim at the right hand side of the fairway and knock the ball about 150 yards forward towards the green with a punch with a hooded 6 iron. That left me with around 135 yards to the flag. The distance was a perfect pitching wedge as the ball was flying well in the heat.
I hit a nice clean shot and The ball finished on the Green about 15 foot from the flag. I had a relatively straight putt for a birdie and it rolled perfectly on line and dropped in the right hand side of the cup !!!!
Wow,
that was an escape,
I couldn't believe I got away with a birdie 4 on the opening hole after a very bad drive.
With a spring in my step I walked onto the second T, confident of where to place the ball, I hit a sweet six iron to the right hand side of the Green, I got a very nice kick towards the flag and was left with a 15 foot putt uphill slightly right-to-left. I hit a good putt, unfortunately the ball stops less than an inch from the hole for an easy tap in par.
Two holes played and one underpar, a very pleasing start. I was striking the ball really nicely, and reached the turn in one under par.
The back nine holes were definitely easier than the First nine and when i reached the 15th tee I was still one underpar,
unfortunately this didn't continue for the last four holes. I finished Bogey par, bogey, bogey. however they did require more accuracy on the drive but offered very very good opportunities for birdies if the ball was placed in the correct place which I didn't from 15-18. I finished the round 2 over par with a gross score of 74.
All in all, not a bad round of golf, but I couldn't help feeling I have left some of my best game out there. At the end of the first day I had a four shot lead over the second place competitor which was Mathieu.
I knew I would be inwith a chance of winning if I could repeat the first round on the second day. I went to bed that night feeling quietly confident but knowing that there was a long way to go until a champion was crowned.
Until the final round
Monk out.
