Ok, so today I went out with some good friends and wonder caddies Dunkles and woggle and the awesome Mr Kung at Banbury golf club. I have been working in my shortgame quite a bit recently so I was looking forward to getting out there an seeing where I am at this point of my winter training programme.
I started ok with a solid par but a cheeky bogey in the next put me straight in to plus figures. The third was where it clicked, a good drive followed by a 5 wood to 8 ft left me with eagle chance. Just went passed on the left and a tap in birdie was to be had. It was then a bit of a mixed bag, with the big stuck letting me down somewhat and my wedges stopping it from becoming embarrassing. At one point I hit +2 and then decided to go for everything rather than think too much. Birdie, birdie on 12-13 got me back into the red before throwing away a silly shot on 16 by missing the green left and having to take my medicine and bogey on the chin.
With 17 to come, and the big stick arguing with me it was a shot I really couldn't afford.
I hit a reasonable shot on 17 and left myself around 115 yard to the pin, I hit a lovely crisp 52deg wedge to 6ft and the putt poured into the middle. Another birdie and back into red numbers with One hole left.
18 was playing around 210 with the wind and a good shot was needed.
A solid 3 iron took care of the distance and I was just off the putting surface, around 15ft from the hole. I decided to play my putter from the fringe and was devestated to see it just miss on the low side and sit 6" from the hole. A tap in par was a certainty and a -1 (70) final score. I felt I left a good half dozen shots out there but for this stage of my winter programme I am quite happy. I can see that the big stick needs work but I can also see the benefits if the wedge work I have put in. Was really confident with a wedge in my hand and was dropping then on the flag all day.
So , next week I will concentrate on the driver and see if I can tweak that in a little then I think I will be ready to face the new season and try and push to retain my European order of merit title.
Happy swinging
